A blog dedicated to nothing but books. TheBlogOnTheBookshelf doesn't get many comments, but it is updated fairly frequently.

Fun with Fruit [Sep. 10th, 2008|03:06 pm]

Evidently in Valencia Spain, for a reason that no human can agree on, people throw about 100 tons of overripe tomatoes at one another. The Tomatina Festival lasts a week long with food, parades, paella, and the usual accoutrements.

It attracts huge numbers of tourists, swelling the towns population three to five times it's normal size.

The actual throwing of tomatoes lasts one hour and is signaled to start and end with a burst of water from cannons.

It sounds like good filthy fun.

I need to get a clock movement with a longer shaft before I can mount the face backing, but this is the basic idea for the clock I've been thinking about making for a long time. Basically a discarded 48 tooth chainring and a used up 12-32 cassette, cleaned and fastened into an arc.

Also, I suck at taking pictures of shiny metal objects.

Evidently breastfeeding is just too darn controversial to show as art in public. Boingboing previously talked in this post about video artist Amy Jenkins who was invited to create an artwork inspired by Salvatore Ferragamo's 5th Avenue shoe store. The company then decided that her artwork was "distasteful" because it showed Amy's daughter breastfeeding and then falling asleep. (More background here.) Now, using a plasma display loaned to her by a BB reader, Amy is finally showing the piece, entitled The Audrey Samsara, in NYC at her solo show at the Kustera/Tilton Gallery. The opening is tonight and the show will run through March 26.

Because remember; it's okay to show people getting eviscerated with forty foot showers of orange-red blood in any media, but a little boobie will turn the kiddies into raving psychopaths. Because, remember We have to Protect the Children.

All you get from protecting the children is a bunch of weak adults. - I can't remember who said this. Bill Hicks? George Carlin?
